It was such a dispute of holding the breath from the first to the last curve. Julio Campos and Thiago Camilo starred in a spectacular duel in the race that opened the schedule of the sixth round of the Stock Car season, held this Sunday, 11, in Campo Grande, MS. After 28 mind-blowing laps, Thiago finished in fist position and Julio in second.
It was Julio Campos' fourth consecutive podium of the season (including victory in the most recent round in Santa Cruz do Sul, RS), making him now the third in the championship, behind only two-time champions Daniel Serra and Ricardo Maurício.
"It was a very good weekend", sums up Julio, who ended up leaving Campo Grande by accomplishing a "I want some more" as the victory was within reach. “We ended up making mistakes at the end of the race and lost the possibility of victory that was being very well built. However, we are getting ready to the next one! The important thing is that we add more decisive points for the championship.”
His teammate, Valdeno Brito, had a much more complicated day, including a film crash in the second race.
“There were two races in which luck was lacking. In the first one, the car had already entered high-temperature safety mode [automatic programming of the category engine supplier to prevent breakdowns] and when I went to pit stop, I was hit in the rear”, says Valdeno.
“I thought I couldn't even do the second race, but the mechanics fixed the car and I was recovering well. However, there was an incident between César Ramos and Nelsinho Piquet on the zero curve and they came out very slowly. I curved my car inside, stuck to the wall, and César must not have seen me. He squeezed me on the wall and had nothing to do. Now, we have to pursue the R$1 million! ”, adds the racer from Paraíba, referring to the next round, which is precisely the most important of the year: the Million Race at Interlagos, on August 25.
Interestingly, it was he, Valdeno Brito, the winner of the first Million Race in history, played in 2008 in Rio de Janeiro, RJ. At the time, he ran through the structure led by Andreas Mattheis - Rodolpho Mattheis´ father, the current Prati-Donaduzzi team leader.
“The result was positive”, comments Rodolpho about Campo Grande round. “We are in the championship fight and the car is fast. In the first race, we opened a big difference in front of the squad. We threatened Thiago and we nearly got another victory. We went up to third position in the championship, scored points for Daniel [Serra], which was the goal, and now we are only 21 points from the leader. Regarding Valdeno, he was in the wrong place at the wrong time, so a bit of luck was missing”, concludes Rodolpho Mattheis.
